10 Februari 2004PS2RolfjeSony sucks at online PS2 registration
When the Linux kit came out for the playstation, I ordered one. It had the network adapter in it, long before it was going to be used for online gaming. As early adopter, I was invited to register for a handle before anybody else had a chance. They sent me a network disk, which didn't work properly with my hardware. I spent 120 minutes tinkering with it, but to no avail. After mailing back and forth with the people from the PS2 Linux site, Sony sent me a newer version of the disk. Again, this disk did not work. I spent another 120 minutes trying to get the darn thing to connect to the net. Then, a friend of mine bought the network adapter (just after they first arrived in the stores). I tried his version of the disk (4.03) and it worked! Well.... sloooooowly but it worked. So I registered, only to find out that my handle was allready taken (thank you Sony for respecting your testers, not). I tried another one, and in the process of registering I spent a complete evening trying to get through the screens (I have foto's to prove it!). Last week, a few months after my registration, I finally got my PIN. I borrowed my friend's disc again (since I haven't got a working one with my VERY expensive Linux kit). Logically I'd forgotten all about my registration details, could not answer the secret question and now I'm back to square one, where my second handle is taken (by my old login) and I have to choose yet another one. The screens are absolutely unfriendly, the characters WAY to big and the whole thing generally sucks. I'll wait with regestering untill I'll see some guys running GT4 to full content, but until that time I am going to talk people out of online gaming with the PS2. How hard is it to build a proper TCP/IP stack with a simple http screen protocol on simple hardware? Sony clearly doesn't have a clue, and judging from the quality, doesn't care.

09 Februari 2004Online RacingRolfjeDiscovered GTPlanet!
A few days ago, I discovered this great site, www.gtplanet.net. The site is very clean looking, has lots and lots of downloadable Gran Turismo 3 replay movies, and a great forum. I am looking into online racing as a substitute for RC racing. Currently the biggest lack is the smell of methanol in the morning.

29 November 2003MiscalleniousRolfjeIndirect flashing with the Canon PowerShot
During the darker winter months, you will be making photos with your digitial camera under low-light conditions. Particularly the cheaper digital camera's have built in flashers with their limitations. Learn how to make indirect-flashing possible with the Canon PowerShot and a piece of paper.

26 April 2001 (updated 26 march 2003)ProceedRolfjeEFRA Homologation of the HPI Toyota GT-1 body for the Proceed
Because EFRA homolgation seems to be a problem for the HPI Toyota GT-1 body, I decided to get involved in the homologation process. Although HPI should really take care of this, I feel commited to the proceed owners out there who voted for this body and I hope HPI will help me in this "quest".

9 Februari 2003RC CommunityRolfjeHPI Forum died
The HPI forum is no more. The open discussion is gone, and replaced by a moderated FAQ. I would like to invite all Proceed owners to come to the starting grid HPI forum, to be able to continue our great daily discussions on the Proceed (and other HPI cars)

9 Februari 2003MessagesRolfjeCVS is up!
A few months ago, I decided to store this page in CVS, because version management became a bit tedious. I installed a Linux machine, installed CVS on it with a pserver deamon, and off we went. All versions of this site (back to 1999 on fortunecity and zonnet domains) got checked in and tagged, so now I can revert this site to any release I wish.
Next problem was that I needed to migrate back to Windows for some other practical reasons (easier printer sharing etc). I backed up the repository, installed windows and restored the CVS repository. It all worked great, as you can see.
All in all it took me a few months because I also moved to a new home. I really hope to have more updates again in the future.

26 August 2002Race ReportsRolfjeProceed Fun Tour Europe #2
Last year we had great fun driving our Proceeds in Gouda, the Netherlands. We decided we should do this again, and a few weeks ago things just "happened" to fal into place. David and his girlfriend, Andrea, had a few weeks off from work, and I could get some days off, too.

22 July 2002ProceedRolfjeProceed FAQ
On the Proceed forum at hpi racing, and the Starting Grid forum, people stop buy to ask questions which we;ve all asked when we started out. To prevent the same questions and answers from being posted over and over again, I tried to make a Frequently Asked Questions page. Enjoy reading.

21 July 2002MiscalleniousRolfjeHow to get to Gouda (nl/en)
Driving at Gouda is big fun. Driving to Gouda however is not so fun at all when you don't know how to get there. Let me show you the way...

6 April 2002MessagesRolfjeGot rid of some Javascript
Some parts of this site were inaccesable for peoplewithout JavaScript enabled browsers, while there was no reason for it. I am losing much of the JavaScripts, replacing them with perl makefile on my side, so you'll only see plain HTML.
Not all javascript is gone yet, but the most important scripts have gone.

5 February 2002MessagesRolfjeChess to sponsor RopaRun (Dutch only)
The ROPARUN (short for ROtterdam to PAris RUN) is the longest non-stop relay race in the world.
The 10th annual ROPARUN will commence on 23 May 2001, starting from the centre of the city of Rotterdam. The ROPARUN is a truly unique running race which takes the teams through 3 countries; Holland, Belgium and France.
The distance of approximately 530km is covered by the teams in 30-48 hours. Each team has 8 runners, each running a total distance of approximately 66km. A unique sporting challenge for runners and their support teams alike.
The spirit of the ROPARUN is not only sporting but also humanitarian. The race was the brainchild of Peter van den Noord and Sjaak Bril with its goal being to improve the quality of life of cancer patients.

Chess will enter a team in this run, under the name Chesstafette. You can be a sponsor of the Chess team. All money collected will be donated to the RopaRun organization. Please mention you read this at www.rolfje.com, for statisical purpouses.

28 September 2001MessagesRolfjeA domain name!
It's been a while since the last update. This season was a quiet one for Team Rolfje. Due to medical reasons, this page could not be updated, nor could I get to the track. As you probably have seen I did have some time to spend on the HPI and starting grid forums, but that's about all.
Recently however, I have purchased a domain name for this site. I hope this motivates me to do more updates and maybe even change the site layout. The world finals are done, and the winter is comming so don't expect much race updates. I have a technical article or two lying around to be published, and maybe I'll fill you in on the trip to Florida I made this summer.

10 May 2001Starter Box ProjectRolfjeStarter box project Part 2: Powerstart murder and Schematics
Although I would like part 2 to be somewhat bigger(more text), I decided to pre-release it and keep the text for a later part. I allready had drawn the schematics and couldn't keep you waiting much longer. I have some home obligations which make it hard to find time to write articles. Maybe part 3 will be larger and have more pictures of the building process...

10 May 2001MessagesRolfjeEvent calendar changed!
I recently noticed some errors in the Dutch 1:8 and 1:10 on-road events calendar. I have updated it to reflect the changes (I hope it is complete and without errors now...). You can find the calendar in the left column of this page under "reference".

10 May 2001RC CommunityRolfjeThoughts on myRCworld (revisited)
After the first article I wrote on this subject, I have spoken to/mailed with many people (including Pieter Bervoets himself) about myRCworld, it's pros and cons, and the intentions and initiatives behind it. I decided I had to re-adjust my opinion so I did. Read the second article on this subject. You can also find this article on myRCworld (surprise!), look for my publications there...

26 April 2001RC CommunityRolfjeThoughts on www.myRCworld.net
Pieter Bervoets proposes a single entry point for all RC car racers out there. Judging www.myRCworld.net, I feel his intentions are "slightly" more that that. A single entry point is a good idea, but I think it is not good that this entry point is hosted by a company with interests in the market and I definetely disagree with the look and feel being exactly the same as the myTSN website of Pieters very own company, Serpent.

Do you have a Linux machine, and are you using pushsite to update your zonnet homepage? If not, you should. If you are and you are experiencing problems, then maybe this little page is your salvation.

12 April 2001Starter Box ProjectRolfjeStarter box project Part 1: Introduction
The first in a series of articles about a project I am currently working on: a profesional starter box for 1/8 scale onroad cars (or any other nitro car if you change the design a bit...). When you collect al articles, it would be possible to build one of these of your own. Features include automatic power-off (no more empty batteries), automatic charging (no more empty batteries), and automatic glowing (no more empty glow batteries). Did I mention that your battery problems will be virtualyover? ;-)

3 Jan. 2001MiscalleniousRolfjePlayStation 2: EA Formula 1 Championship Season 2000 review
Reason for this article is to tell you about a rather dissapointing game. The Playstation 2 is a great console, don't get me wrong, but this formula 1 game doesn't come close to formula 1 racing, other than that the drivers and cars look like the real thing.

1 Jan. 2001Team NewsRolfjeChess iT possible sponsor 2001
Racing the Dutch National championships is now aconsiderable option (again).

29 Dec. 2000Team NewsRolfjeIBM Sponsorship discontinued
We have to re-evalutate our financial position. As you may well know, racing a 1/8 scale on-road racing car is quite expensive, particularly if you want to race national championships. The Dutch Nationals are off for now (regretably).
