  • Updating this HTML site became tedious and compared to the insignificance of the message not worth it. That's why I'm trying the XS4ALL blogging service. So, for people who are missing updates to this site, you can find more recent articles, pictures and posts on my blog

Sony sucks at online PS2 registration by Rolfje,
10 Februari 2004
  • When the Linux kit came out for the playstation, I ordered one. It had the network adapter in it, long before it was going to be used for online gaming. As early adopter, I was invited to register for a handle before anybody else had a chance. They sent me a network disk, which didn't work properly with my hardware. I spent 120 minutes tinkering with it, but to no avail. After mailing back and forth with the people from the PS2 Linux site, Sony sent me a newer version of the disk. Again, this disk did not work. I spent another 120 minutes trying to get the darn thing to connect to the net. Then, a friend of mine bought the network adapter (just after they first arrived in the stores). I tried his version of the disk (4.03) and it worked! Well.... sloooooowly but it worked. So I registered, only to find out that my handle was allready taken (thank you Sony for respecting your testers, not). I tried another one, and in the process of registering I spent a complete evening trying to get through the screens (I have foto's to prove it!). Last week, a few months after my registration, I finally got my PIN. I borrowed my friend's disc again (since I haven't got a working one with my VERY expensive Linux kit). Logically I'd forgotten all about my registration details, could not answer the secret question and now I'm back to square one, where my second handle is taken (by my old login) and I have to choose yet another one. The screens are absolutely unfriendly, the characters WAY to big and the whole thing generally sucks. I'll wait with regestering untill I'll see some guys running GT4 to full content, but until that time I am going to talk people out of online gaming with the PS2. How hard is it to build a proper TCP/IP stack with a simple http screen protocol on simple hardware? Sony clearly doesn't have a clue, and judging from the quality, doesn't care.
Discovered GTPlanet! by Rolfje,
09 Februari 2004
  • A few days ago, I discovered this great site, www.gtplanet.net. The site is very clean looking, has lots and lots of downloadable Gran Turismo 3 replay movies, and a great forum. I am looking into online racing as a substitute for RC racing. Currently the biggest lack is the smell of methanol in the morning.

  • During the darker winter months, you will be making photos with your digitial camera under low-light conditions. Particularly the cheaper digital camera's have built in flashers with their limitations. Learn how to make indirect-flashing possible with the Canon PowerShot and a piece of paper.

EFRA Homologation of the HPI Toyota GT-1 body for the Proceed by Rolfje,
26 April 2001 (updated 26 march 2003)
  • Because EFRA homolgation seems to be a problem for the HPI Toyota GT-1 body, I decided to get involved in the homologation process. Although HPI should really take care of this, I feel commited to the proceed owners out there who voted for this body and I hope HPI will help me in this "quest".

CVS is up! by Rolfje,
9 Februari 2003
  • A few months ago, I decided to store this page in CVS, because version management became a bit tedious. I installed a Linux machine, installed CVS on it with a pserver deamon, and off we went. All versions of this site (back to 1999 on fortunecity and zonnet domains) got checked in and tagged, so now I can revert this site to any release I wish.
Next problem was that I needed to migrate back to Windows for some other practical reasons (easier printer sharing etc). I backed up the repository, installed windows and restored the CVS repository. It all worked great, as you can see.
All in all it took me a few months because I also moved to a new home. I really hope to have more updates again in the future.
